Why Parents Use Screens for Kids: Stress or Strategy? (2026)

As a doctoral student in child and adolescent clinical psychology, I've been exploring the fascinating relationship between parental stress and screen time. It's a topic that hits close to home for many parents, especially in today's fast-paced world.

The scene is all too familiar: a busy parent, exhausted from a long day, trying to juggle dinner preparations and a chaotic household. In such moments, the temptation to hand over a tablet or smartphone to the kids can be overwhelming. But is this really about the kids' behavior, or is it a reflection of the parent's own stress levels?

My recent research delves into this very question. It suggests that the decision to reach for a screen is often more about the adult's ability to cope with stress than the child's behavior. In fact, nearly 70% of parents cite managing their child's technology use as a primary source of stress.

The Stress of Parenting

Parenting is a challenging journey, filled with daily hassles and the weighty responsibility of raising a happy, healthy individual. It's no wonder that managing children's screen time can be a significant source of stress for parents.

In my study, we examined three distinct types of parenting stress: stress stemming from personal struggles, stress related to the parent-child relationship, and stress caused by a child's difficult behavior.

Our findings revealed an intriguing pattern. Parents experiencing high levels of stress due to personal issues were less likely to set limits on their child's screen time, regardless of the child's behavior. Similarly, parents stressed by their child's temperament or challenging behavior were more likely to use screens as a management tool.

However, parents who felt stressed about their relationship with their child were not more inclined to hand over a screen. This suggests that the decision to use screens as a coping mechanism is complex and influenced by various factors.

Implications and Takeaways

As we transition into the new school year, it's essential for caregivers to recognize the impact of stress on their decision-making. Creating an action plan to support their well-being and establish healthy screen media routines can be beneficial.

This could involve implementing screen-free zones or times, setting limits on app usage, and even involving children in developing these plans. By making proactive decisions during calmer moments, parents can better support their families and themselves.

In my opinion, this research highlights the importance of self-care and stress management for parents. It's a reminder that taking care of ourselves is not selfish, but rather a necessary step in being able to care for our children effectively.

What many people don't realize is that by addressing our own stress, we can create a more positive and healthy environment for our families. It's a win-win situation, and one that deserves our attention and effort.
